POTATOES

Pakistan is one of the largest producers of potatoes in the world. It is estimated that the annual production is about 2 Million MT, which is used for various types of consumption. The major production of the potato crop is harvested in the autumn season. The crop is distributed over eight different agro-ecological zones. 70 - 80% of the production is concentrated in the fertile land of Central Punjab and (NWFP). The best & famous potato production areas of Central Punjab are Sahiwal, Okara, Chiniot, Jhang, Khanewal, Kasur, Gujranwala and Sheikhupura. On the other hand, the famous potato production areas of (NWFP) are Nowshera, Mardan, Abbottabad, Swat, Mansehra and the historical city of Chitral.

ONIONS

Pakistan is the fifth leading onion producing country. Pakistan annually produces about 1.5 million tons of onions, with an increasing trend during the past 6 years.It produces sweet and pungent onions in various colors, shapes and sizes. The nursery for autumn crop of onion is raised in first week of July and the seedlings are transplanted in the field in the middle of August for harvesting of bulbs during December. The major onion growing districts are Kasur, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Vehari, Khaneawal, D.G. Khan, and Jhang in Punjab, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Sukkar, N. Feroze and Badin in Sindh, Swat in NWFP and Mastung, Kalat, Chagai, Khuzdar and Turbat in Balochistan. These 21 districts account for more than 76 percent of the total production of onion in Pakistan.
